My Story

My Journey: From Diagnosis to Determination

My name is Ho Da-Wei, and I was born in 1995. Living with severe non-verbal autism has shaped my journey in ways I never could have imagined. While communication has always been a challenge, I’ve discovered that creativity can speak louder than words.

My early school years were a mix of challenges and small victories. Hyperactivity, difficulty sitting still, and severe learning hurdles made each day a battle. But amidst these struggles, a unique talent began to emerge—my ability to tear toilet paper at perfectly equal intervals. It may sound simple, but this skill opened up a new world for me. What started as a quirky habit evolved into a passion for paper cutting and painting.

As I moved through middle and high school, I found myself in a special education class, surrounded by teachers who believed in my potential. The years were tough, but perseverance paid off when I was admitted to a five-year vocational program in culinary arts. There, I discovered a new love—cooking and culinary service—which has since become a joyful part of my life.

At the same time, I joined the Taiwan Autistic Arts Association, where my creative journey took off. With the patient guidance of my teachers and the support of my family, I began to develop a unique artistic style, often inspired by my favorite animal, the owl. This love for owls led to a breakthrough moment: I became the first artist in my association to sell a piece of artwork. My owl-themed creation was collected for around US$250, a moment of immense pride that confirmed my belief in the power of creativity.

Today, I continue to explore the world through my art, sharing my thoughts and passions in ways that words cannot. My journey has been a blend of struggles and triumphs, each step forward fueled by the unwavering support of my family, teachers, and friends.

I may still face challenges with independence, but I’m known for my diligence, seriousness, and a gentle, steady demeanor. Looking back, I’m grateful for every obstacle and every victory—they’ve all shaped who I am today. As I move forward, one step at a time, I’m excited to see where my creativity will take me next. My story is a testament to the incredible heights that individuals with autism can reach, and I’m eager to continue sharing my art with the world.
