My Story
My Journey: From Diagnosis to Determination
When I was just 2 years old, I was diagnosed with severe autism—a diagnosis that came with its own set of challenges. Over the years, my condition has evolved and is now considered moderate, but the journey has been anything but easy. Alongside my mom, I spent years volunteering at the Soka Gakkai organization, where I was affectionately dubbed 'Love Cat' by the leader of the Autistic Star group. This nickname became a symbol of the love and support that has carried me through life.
My early school years were marked by both triumphs and trials. I was placed in a regular elementary school class with additional support from a resource class. Despite this, my hyperactivity, difficulty sitting still, and severe learning challenges made each day a battle. Cognitive delays and language expression difficulties only added to the struggle. At one point, a teacher suggested that I transfer to a special education school, but I was determined to persevere—and I did. I managed to graduate, a victory that was hard-won.
As I moved into middle and high school, I was placed in a special education class after careful evaluation. Those years were some of the most challenging in my life. I longed to be in a regular school environment, a dream I could only express through typing. After high school, the prospect of further education seemed distant, almost impossible. But then, a door opened—I was admitted to a five-year vocational program in culinary arts without having to take an entrance exam. For the past four years, with my mom by my side and the unwavering support of my teachers and classmates, I’ve discovered a passion for cooking and culinary service. What started as a dream is now a joyful reality.
During this time, I also became a part of the Taiwan Autistic Arts Association, where I began learning drawing techniques and honing my focus. In the beginning, my creative skills were limited, and I needed step-by-step guidance. But with the patient support of my teacher and my sister-like volunteer, I began to develop my unique artistic style. Slowly but surely, I also learned to cultivate patience—a quality that continues to serve me well.
While I still face challenges with independence, I’m known for being a diligent and serious young person, with a gentle and steady demeanor. Looking back, my journey has been bittersweet, filled with both struggles and triumphs. But through it all, I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support and companionship of my teachers and family. As I continue on this path of learning and growth, I am more determined than ever to keep moving forward, one step at a time.
